MEDIA RELEASE: Sustainable Australia Party launches 'Cam for Campbelltown'

Cameron McEwan will put our environment and community first.

In an area overwhelmed by overdevelopment and sprawl, the lead candidate endorsed by the Sustainable Australia Party, Cameron McEwan, hopes to bring a breath of fresh air into Campbelltown City Council. Running on the party's 'Environment First' platform in the September 14 NSW Local Government election, Cam hopes to bring attention to systemic unfairness in the NSW planning system that prioritises vested interests over the wellbeing of our community and environment. He will address the rapid and unrestrained development in the area.

“We need to address the housing crisis in a more sustainable manner. There are ways to do this without cutting down much of our bushland. Endless sprawl isn’t the solution and just creates more infrastructure and environmental problems that we and future generations will have to deal with. We can’t afford to be short-sighted about our environment and quality of life,” said Cameron.

Cam is in his late 20s and moved into the area with his now-wife several years ago after falling in love with it while working as a courier at the time.

“I was driving all across the Greater Sydney Region but for some reason whenever my work took me to Campbelltown, I felt like it was a place I could belong. The area was green and the local community was warm and friendly.

"Being young and relatively new to the area is a huge positive because I don’t take anything for granted and I don’t overlook issues that others might simply accept as ‘how things are’. I want to protect our trees and beautiful waterways and create more green spaces that the community can enjoy; ones that don’t require a ticket to enter,” he added.

Also an active member of local club 'Campbelltown Joggers' Cam tells of the unique perspective his hobby provides him.

“As an avid runner who loves to explore new places, I see close-up so much of the local area including some parts that need attention. For example, neglected parks and streams filled with rubbish, and footpaths that don’t connect up and end in the middle of nowhere. This poor path planning means that locals can’t access facilities they might otherwise wish to use.

“If elected in September, I will strive to fix these while also addressing the big picture issues like protecting our environment and creating more transparent planning systems to reign in the unsustainable overdevelopment and providing the infrastructure and services that our community desperately needs. With care and careful planning, Campbelltown has a bright future ahead of it and I want to actively support that,” said Cameron.

[14/08/24 - Edit: We are pleased to advise that a 'Group of 8' was achieved (see below call-out) and Cam will contest the election!]

Group of 8

At this stage the Sustainable Australia Party hasn’t finalised the required group of eight candidates that is required to put our party name on the ballot paper with a box above the line. Cam welcomes interested Campbelltown residents to email him.

“If you’re a Campbelltown local, passionate about our environment and quality of life, and want to assist, please contact me about our ‘Cam for Campbelltown’ campaign.
