Sustainable Australia Party to introduce bill closing loophole that shields politicians from corruption investigations.
Sustainable Australia Party WA has drawn column A in the new state-wide Legislative Council (Upper House) ballot paper and are campaigning strong to de-corrupt politics for a fair and sustainable Western Australia.
Lead Upper House candidate Daniel Minson[1], a senior civil engineer at the Water Corporation and a Councillor at the Town of Victoria Park, has committed to introducing a private members bill to amend the Corruption, Crime and Misconduct Act 2003 (WA) to restore the power and jurisdiction of the Corruption and Crime Commission ("the CCC").
Mr Minson said “A little known loophole has given MPs immunity from bribery and misconduct investigations since the Barnett Government overhauled the CCC in 2015[2].
“Sustainable Australia Party would introduce a private members bill to restore the CCC’s power and jurisdiction over MPs and make sure they cannot hide from investigations behind the broad umbrella of parliamentary privilege.
“Our bill would reintroduce amendments first proposed by Attorney-General John Quigley in 2017 but have been buried while Labor controlled both houses of parliament.
“The simple insertion of the word “exclusively” into the Corruption, Crime and Misconduct Act 2003 would restore the power and jurisdiction of the CCC, in relation to misconduct by Members of Parliament which could constitute a breach of the Criminal Code[3].
"This bill, along with banning political donations, transparent reporting of lobbying and banning ex-politicians from employment with major companies they have been regulating, will start to de-corrupt politics for a fair and sustainable Western Australia." Mr Minson added.
