Better manage problem gambling and reduce per capita losses.

Policy Methods (Federal)

To help achieve this Sustainable Australia Party will:

  • Prohibit sports betting agency advertising and promotions as follows:
    • On all sports broadcasting from beginning to end
    • Before 10:30pm on all television, radio and online broadcasting, programming and promotions
    • In all newspapers other than in designated sports sections
    • On and in all sports stadiums, other than at designated betting shops

Policy Methods (State)

To help achieve this Sustainable Australia Party will:

  • Introduce a mandatory registered cashless gaming card system to address gambling harm and criminal gaming activity, including the fourteen-point plan of the Alliance for Gambling Reform(1)
  • Implement the Productivity Commission’s recommendation for $1 maximum poker machine bets per spin, limiting losses to around $120 per hour
  • Cap poker machine numbers at current levels in all States and Territories, with a gradual reduction and/or complete phase out in all pubs and clubs according to an appropriate timeframe for each State/Territory
  • Engage in broad community consultation prior to the building or material expansion of any casinos
  • Conduct an enquiry into the feasibility of nationalising Australia’s casinos in order to turn them into world’s best practice, and least-harmful, operations
