CONSCIENCE VOTE ISSUES

Policy
Sustainable Australia candidates have freedom to follow their conscience on the following issues in a parliamentary vote. Our preference however is for greater participatory democracy for voters in Australia through plebiscites (see GOVERNANCE policy). We are in favour of the Australian people openly debating important issues rather than all issues being decided by politicians and ‘elites’:

  • Republic – Sustainable Australia sees a national plebiscite as the best way to re-commence deliberations on this important issue. A plebiscite should propose that Australia should have an Australian head of state. Both sides should be free to present their case on a level playing field. The will of the broader Australian population should prevail.
  • Voluntary euthanasia – Sustainable Australia sees a national plebiscite as the best way to democratically determine this important issue. Both sides should be free to present their case on a level playing field. Sustainable Australia expects the vote to support voluntary euthanasia. The will of the broader Australian population should prevail.
